Dr. Darryl S. Tukufu is a distinguished Professor of Christian Sociology and Urban Studies Specialist with extensive missional experience in the United States. Holding a Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in Community Organization & Social Change and an M.A. in Urban Studies with a focus on Public Administration from the University of Akron, Dr. Tukufu also earned a B.A. in Social Studies from Youngstown State University. His doctoral dissertation explored voluntary association membership trends among African Americans and European Americans, while his master’s thesis analyzed voting patterns of Black communities in Akron.
Dr. Tukufu’s academic career spans numerous institutions, including roles as Assistant Professor of Sociology at Bethel University, Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Sociology at Victory University, and Adjunct Professor at Belhaven University, Cambridge College, and the Memphis Center for Urban Theological Studies. He has also served in leadership roles such as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer at Victory University, and Executive Director of the Intercultural Dialog Council at Crichton College. His teaching specializations include Sociology, Urban Studies, Human Services, and African American Studies.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Tukufu has contributed to studies like the Adolescent Male Study with the Memphis Urban League and the Rural Poverty Study at Memphis State University. His publications include A Guide Toward the Successful Development of African-American Males and Nubian Elegance Rare and Divine, alongside co-authored works like Healed: Adjusting to Our New Normal. His professional experience includes presidency roles at the Memphis Urban League, Urban League of Middle Tennessee, and the Tukufu Group, as well as executive leadership at the Greater Cleveland Roundtable and the Urban League of Portland.
Dr. Tukufu’s community service is extensive, with board memberships at the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Challenge, and the Association of Non-Profit Executives. Recognized with awards like the Tennessee Education Association’s E. Harper Johnson Human Relations Award and inclusion in Who’s Who in Black America, Dr. Tukufu is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and remains active in professional organizations like the American Sociological Association.
