ENS2200EN - Earth resources and sustainable development

Course description

Our civilization is heavily dependent on the extraction, transformation, and utilization of earth resources such as fossil fuels and solid minerals. Consider sustainable development within the context of exploring, exploiting, and transforming earth resources. Explore the fundamentals of selected earth resources, including: coal, gold, petroleum, mineral sands, base metals, and geothermal energy.

How this course benefits students

Students gain understanding of different earth resources and how the transformation of earth resources has shaped human civilization. Students articulate why it is crucial for earth resources to be explored, developed and exploited in a sustainable manner and what this means for earth resources, most of which are non-renewable in nature.

Why this course is important

The ability for humans to explore, exploit and transform earth resources sets them apart from the rest of creation. However, most earth resources are non-renewable (meaning they cannot be replaced or regenerated naturally) and should be utilized with this understanding in mind. This course equips learners with a foundational understanding of earth resources and what it means for these resources to be utilized in a sustainable manner.
