The Undergraduate Certificate in Biblical Hebrew introduces students to basic Hebrew grammar, syntax and vocabulary before moving on to more advanced elements of grammar and syntax and the fundamentals of Old Testament Hebrew exegesis. Certificate graduates will be able to analyze the Hebrew Text and make use of exegetical tools in their interpretation of the Old Testament. They will also learn the importance of a sound hermeneutical framework for interpreting the Old Testament from a missional perspective.
Any student who wishes to participate in God’s mission in the world should be aware of the fundamentally missional nature of the Old Testament. Apart from learning to read the Old Testament in its original language, students will also learn to critically engage hermeneutical approaches that have failed to identify and illuminate the missional nature of the Old Testament as a whole. In the process, students will learn to identify the mission of God as the grand narrative in different genres throughout the Old Testament. Students who complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Biblical Hebrew will have mastery of Biblical Hebrew grammar and syntax, develop competence in reading and translating selected Old Testament texts, and develop skills in analyzing and interpreting the Old Testament from a missional perspective.
