MED3300EN - Social Media Theory & Writing

Course description

Social media is a relatively new phenomenon in the world of media studies. Yet, it has hit mainstream at a rate of speed that is difficult to maintain. This course introduces students to the ways in which people connect both on- and- offline and the theories behind why and how social media has become mainstream, what the future is for social media and how they can engage (with purpose) in social media marketing. Students actively learn why sharing knowledge and social bonding are important to effectively communicating on social media platforms.

How this course benefits students

Opportunities to enrich social media experiences through missionally-minded communication are rare. This course helps students see the need for God-centered social media marketing and teaches them to apply such approaches to their own writing for social media.

Why this course is important

Writing and marketing for social media platforms are becoming important to businesses and organizations around the world. Therefore, clear, concise, compelling communication is key to social media marketing strategies. Students learn to combine such strategies through the eyes of a missional leadership.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

In order to write for social media with heavenly purpose, we must look to God's word. Matthew 5:16 says, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Our words must reflect that of our Father in heaven.

Missionally driven

Our goals and dreams for the future are not our own. This course shows students that although social media is in fact mainstream, the strategies in which they choose to market themselves online must be a direct reflection of Jesus Christ.

Contextually informed

This course allows students to explore past and present social media marketing strategies from various companies and organizations. Students form concrete examples as to the success and failure rates of such strategies.

Interculturally focused

Although the majority of the world is engaged in social media, not all countries utilize the same social media outlets. It is important for students to be aware that social media strategies that work for one country or location, may not work for another. Students compare and contrast such differences.

Practically minded

Social media marketing is a must-have for today's successful businesses and organizations. Online communication continues to take precedence over many other forms of communication. This course gives students the tools they need to begin writing for, and adequately marketing themselves and/or businesses or organizations, for social media platforms.

Experientially transformed

This course gives students practical ways in which they can write succinct and engaging messages for social media platforms. Students are expected to team up with two or three peers to create a social media campaign for both Facebook and Instagram, with a string of effective messages utilizing text and visuals.
