Course description

Advanced sight translation training focusing on medical records. Includes identification of the origins of medical terms, and theory and practice of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation as applied to common medical situations. Advanced consecutive and simultaneous interpretation skills building: listening/prediction, analysis, note-taking, recall, positioning, situational control, shadowing and decalage, equipment use and interpreting

How this course benefits students

Interpreting in the medical field is rapidly expanding and the need for competent interpreters is increasing. Students will learn the origin of words which are commonly used, but specific to this field, and how to discover the meaning of words with which they may not be familiar. This will help them as they are in the midst of an interpreting situation to be able to continue the interpretation without a break. This course will give them practical methods to use to keep them on point as they interpret

Why this course is important

Practical experience in various medical settings is essential for a medical interpreter. Students will gain a basic understanding of the common words and processes used across the spectrum of medical interpreting. Students will also become familiar with the documents and situations to accelerate their ability to function effectively as interpreters.

Biblically based

In Matthew 25:43 Jesus makes it clear that we are to attend to those in need. He specifically mentions the “sick.” Therefore, it is imperative that we equip ourselves appropriately to be able to minister and work in these situations.

When people are in unfamiliar or difficult situations, often they are most open to the Gospel. By nature, interactions in a medical context across language barriers are unfamiliar and more difficult. It is at these times that we have the opportunity to share the love of Jesus even as we are working with them. They can see our concern for them and see Jesus through us.

The course will be specifically based on the issues present in the medical environment. Students will gain insight from the situations which are common to this field.

The entire objective of this course is to interpret one language to another fluently. Culture is inherent in our language. Therefore, in order for effective communication to take place, it will be imperative that students become aware of the cultures involved.

Since much of the material being presented is the same across the different aspects of the field, by becoming fluent in these common scenarios, students will be able to implement the concepts in a broad area of application.

This course will expose students to a variety of real world situations, allowing students to become familiar with circumstances commonly faced when working in this field. Students will learn how to assess their own abilities and to adapt to different medical settings.
