The study of the criminal justice system from a procedural perspective. This course of study is focused on law, procedure, judicial operations, constitutional and procedural considerations that affect arrests, searches, and seizures. Students will also incorporate a biblical perspective based on Missional University's core concepts and scripture.
To provide the student with facts about criminal procedure in our world today and how peace officers must have knowledge of and adherence to the law. Students will be able to clearly report in writing and verbally the rights of police and the public. Students will be able to understand the role of policing and how to practically apply criminal processes and procedures in maintaining the safety of the public.
The importance of understanding, mercy, and balanced justice will be encouraged and reflected by this course to help students understand the importance of the criminal justice system but to also gain a better understanding of its complex processes and how it related to policing. Finally, students through a biblical perspective and evidence-based approaches will make recommendations and place a high emphasis on change for the betterment of society, policing, and the criminal justice system as a whole.
Knowledge and wisdom are spoken of in the Holy Bible and officers need guidance to perform at maximum capacity and efficiency. Also, punishments and sin (crime) have biblical reflections that can pertain to this course in the sense of modern approaches within the criminal justice system. Rehabilitation can be spoken of within scripture pertaining to mercy and retributive justice is swift and harsh.
Criminal procedure, punishments, and other aspects of the criminal justice system, with biblical insight, can help aid future professionals for the betterment of society. Society can be aided by a more well-rounded officer who is spiritually trained and grounded. Officers are not simply utilized for law enforcement capabilities anymore. We are counselors, spiritual shoulders to lean on, and the call when individuals seek shelter from an overwhelming flood of negative impacts. The community, criminal justice, and judicial systems will be aided through biblical perspectives and reflection.
This course will contextualize biblical perspectives and references to help gain an understanding of punishment and crime through a spiritual lens. The more equipped our future professionals are, the more effective and efficient the criminal justice system will become through fundamental and spiritual skill-sets.
Like society, the criminal justice system is diverse and complex. Therefore, future criminal justice professionals need a well-rounded and fundamental education to help reflect and improve future services. Adequate representation of minorities is important within the justice system and intercultural issues will be reflected upon during this course.
Students will exit this course with the understanding of blind justice and how the contemporary system strayed from effective, efficient, and rehabilitative (mercy) processes and began a more harsh and retributive form of justice that does not appear to be balanced. Therefore, critical thinking and biblical perspectives will be utilized to help resolve and counter future occurrences of imbalance.
Students will be asked throughout the course to reflect and incorporate biblical perspectives into their assignments with evidence from scripture. Also, changes will be recommended through critical thinking and evidence-based practices reflected through academic and scholarly sources.
