THC3510EN - Exodus and Liberation in Black Theology

Course description

This course examines the Exodus narrative as the paradigm of the missio Dei—the missional heart of the Triune God who hears the cries of the oppressed, reveals His holy name, and delivers His people for covenant worship and witness. From an evangelical conviction in the authority and sufficiency of Scripture, students will explore how African American interpreters have faithfully proclaimed the God of Exodus as the same God who identifies with the marginalized today. Special attention is given to James Cone’s insistence that God’s liberating mission is not a human project imposed on Scripture, but the very grain of biblical revelation itself. The course equips students to preach and teach Exodus in a way that magnifies the sovereignty, holiness, and missionally-driven mercy of God while rejecting both prosperity-gospel distortions and conquest-theology justifications for oppression.
