SPT3500EN - Sport Coaching

Course description

This course is an in-depth look into the characteristics of a missional-minded sport coach. The course delves into leadership styles, behaviour, goal setting, establishing short- and long-term objectives, working with teams and individual athletes, developing tactics, and appropriate coaching techniques based on age, gender, ability, and purpose. This course includes an international perspective of sport and though broad in nature, allows the student to develop specific and tangible goals within their working environment.

How this course benefits students

Students gain an appreciation of how a Christian coach looks at sport in a Christ-centered manner. This does not diminish the role of the coach as competitor but brings to light the many ways a coach serves as a mentor, leading other coaches and athletes to have a greater sense of God's purpose in and through sport. Students have a greater sense of the power of sport as a tool to expand the kingdom of God and how personal decisions have a powerful and lasting effect on their own athletes and opponents.

Why this course is important

This course provides a framework for Christian coaches. Whether it is local community sport or Sport Evangelism in cross-cultural environments, this course helps teach coaches how to live out their Christian faith in a win-at-all-cost environment. This course provides a coach with a foundation of coaching based on Scripture rather than human success.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

Scripture drives the concepts for the Christian coach. At times it may appear counter-culture to what is familiar in the sport world, but coaches that recognize humility, honesty, loving opponents, and many other fundamental precepts to the Christian Faith are essential elements to becoming a successful coach.

Missionally driven

The purpose of coaching, which may be a vocation or hobby, has the same essential purpose; to represent who God is and teach others about the grace and forgiveness God offers. This course strives to develop coaches at the highest levels but never forsaking the goal of leading others to Christ.

Contextually informed

Coaching is a broad topic with many different approaches. This course uses a current and highly accepted text which provides each student with current trends and constructs to build their personal coaching portfolio. However, the missional purpose is woven throughout the course and continually integrated.

Interculturally focused

Sport coaching is international in scope and athletes across all walks of life participate and enjoy sport and competition. This course provides a look at international sport, religion and sport, and sport as an evangelistic tool both at home and abroad.

Practically minded

Coaching, which is a cousin to educating, both formally and informally, works with every age from 3 years to seniors. A coach has the ability to guide and mentor youth, demonstrate healthy and appropriate behaviours, and be a visible witness of the saving love of Jesus. Coaching is a frontline, grassroots position, which is admired by most and has influence over others. In this way, coaching is a practical profession or hobby which interacts with all types of people and all types of situations. This course is designed to give practical ideas and solutions to students that love sport and people.

Experientially transformed

This course emphasizes the individual needs and goals of each student. Rather than provide a shotgun approach to educating, this course allows each student to work on their coaching ambitions and current situation in a practical and transforming way. Students are asked to reflect and create, based on their personal experience and situation, and allow God to reveal himself in the here and now of their lives.
