Course description

The course will present a broad and general overview of the field of Psychology. The main goals of this course are to acquaint students with the different areas contained within psychology including learning, memory, research methods, thinking patterns, emotion and motivation, stress, personality, and social behaviors. The course will provide some of the major concepts of each area.

How this course benefits students

An understanding of the field of psychology both historic and current will be highlighed in this course. Students will be able to identify the major fields of study and theoretical perspectives within psychology.

Why this course is important

An emphasis on understanding historical framework of the human mind and behavior is discussed. Biblical events and principles are discussed to help capture the connection of the biblical perspecitive of the human mind and behavior. Thus, students will have an opporunity to overcome their own misunderstandings regarding psychological processes in order to better serve in their missional calling.

Biblically based

Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding psychological priniciples related to God's Word. The course will be a valuable tool as it will explore the human mind and behaviors. A biblical perspective will expand and complement biblical understanding of mankind.

Missionally driven

The course is combination of the field of psychology and relevant application for a missional leader. The course will provide fundamental theories, concepts, and principles of psychology as it relates Christian believers serving in their missional calling.

Contextually informed

A contextual learning approach will be used for this course in order to students to understand the field of psychology and real world situation. In addition, contexual learning will be used to address biblical events and psychological problems.

Interculturally focused

An understanding of psychological processes through a sociocultural lens will be a focus for this course. Students will gain a greater appreciation of cultural groups within and outside of the own culture. A consideration of culture in interpreting biblical event, personal experiences, and in application of cultural diversity issues will be examined.

Practically minded

The purpose of this course is to encourage students to critically think about psychological processes. As students develop a greater understanding of psychological principles and a biblical perspectiive pertaining to the field of psychology, they will be able to actively participate in identifying and connecting with those in the community with psychological needs.

Experientially transformed

Opporuntities for experiential learning will be provided for this course. Students will conduct projects and complete assignments that will develop their knowledge, skills, and values of the field of psychology and God's Word. Experiential learning will be utilized to stimulate academic inquiry.
