EJS3100EN - Geopolitical Dimensions of Environmental Security & Conflict

Course description

Environmental geopolitics analyzes mainstream understandings of human-environment interactions to provide a more complete analysis of political and physical processes and how they should fit together in our zero sum world. Knowledge, assumptions and agendas of case studies are critically examined as they relate to security and conflict. Traditional notions of security and conflict are re-examined in light of steady state modelling.

How this course benefits students

This course benefits students because the student is able to identify geographical areas that are deficient in environmental justice and the issues that have been ignored. This course identifies the remediation required in these deficient states and possibly employment opportunities.

Why this course is important

This course is important because environmental justice efforts have not been uniform. Communities of minorities and low income in the United States and the world are damaged by environmental hazards and land uses not warranted. Issues of discrimination, racism, and injustice are prevalent where industrial hazards, effects on environmental quality, and impacts on health have been ignored. However, efforts of non-governmental agencies (NGA) have addressed environmental justice issues in several states.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

This course reaches out to all because there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Jesus Christ. Galatians 3:28. The koine Greek πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς εἷς means that we are one body. When one in the body suffers, we all suffer. When a minority suffers, we all suffer.

Missionally driven

The Christian Environmental Justice Advocate has a wonderfully made toolbox to come to the aid of environmentally afflicted minorities and low income communities.

Contextually informed

While the current administration is making great strides in environmental justice, particularly with President Biden’s Justice40 program, this course informs students that there is not equal justice for all in this country.

Interculturally focused

This course focuses on minorities and low-income groups such as indigenous peoples around the world. These communities are widely different in their cultures and advocates tailor make their support to these different cultures.

Practically minded

This course is practical because it applies evolving technological, scientific and legal analytical methods to minister to people and their respective communities.

Experientially transformed

The student is transformed experientially by all the above to become an Environmental Justice Advocate.
