ECO3320EN - Urban Waters Management

Course description

Presentations, class discussions and reading assignments will introduce students to key principles, basic concepts and techniques of urban water management. The course focuses on urban hydrology and drainage, ecological and biochemical processes and water sensitive drainage systems.

How this course benefits students

Students acquire the required knowledge to understand hydrology and water drainage in urban areas to understand, discuss and explain advantages and disadvantages of conventional urban drainage systems and the ecological and engineering principles of water sensitive drainage systems.

Why this course is important

With the lack or inefficiency of drainage systems in many urban areas, the course equips students to propose or assess decision takers to implement water sensitive drainage systems to minimize infrastructure and maintenance costs, increase value of landscape, protect the environment, improve receiving water body’s quality and promote natural purification processes.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

Job 5:10 "he gives rain on the earth and sends waters on the fields" is a simple way to confirm the wisdom of God when He designed a water sensitive system to manage drainage after falling rain.

Missionally driven

Students bring hope and share the love of God as they promote the implementation of water sensitive drainage systems in areas where people are suffering health, flood and pollution problems due to absence of or collapsed drainage systems.

Contextually informed

Urban population worldwide is growing exponentially, in many cases disorderly. Lack or inefficiency of drainage systems in urban areas contributes to contamination of water sources, health problems, flooding and environment degradation. There is an eminent need for the implementation of water sensitive drainage systems based on hydrologic principles around the world.

Interculturally focused

Absence or inefficiency of drainage systems around the world is an intercultural problem. The course explores different cultural scenarios to strengthen students’ criteria related to water management in urban areas.

Practically minded

With the aid of case-studies this course gives students the necessary practical tools and knowledge to contribute to the implementation of water sensitive drainage systems.

Experientially transformed

Students gain experience by practicing their knowledge through case-studies and visual tools to develop their ideas based on the concepts and principles acquired in the course.
