This course develops an understanding of the Biblical perspective on the poor by examining the teaching of both the Old and New Testaments. The course also traces the history of the Evangelical church and its response and approach to issues of poverty. In addition, students will study the background and history of the micro-finance movement and how it can be utilized in the hands of Christians engaged in economic development. Finally, critical issues will be highlighted, such as the concept of redistribution and income inequality.
Students will understand the importance of serving the poor worldwide. They will be equipped with a holistic view of the Christian mission and learn practical steps to create economic development projects. The course is Biblical, practical, and will lead to action. The information will provide direction to those in urban ministry as well as those seeking to alleviate poverty and bring concrete results to those in need.
Students need to understand the importance of ministry to the poor in the eyes of God. They will gain a Biblical perspective of ministry to the poor. Specifically, students will gain an understanding of the historical evangelical response to those in need. They will learn about the historical and current impact of the micro-finance movement.
