Course description

This course will identify and focus attention on providing knowledge of internet usage in people’s lives and the influence this influences our personal lives. Students will learn about a digital life and will acknowledge issues such as cyberbullying, managing their identity online, as well as mental health issues associated with internet use. The internet has become an integral part of our lives, with large numbers of people spending an average of 20 hours online per week. This is likely to grow with the advent of smart phones which provide 'internet in your pocket'. This shift towards online activities has led many to question whether it is having a positive or negative effect on our wellbeing. Particularly for the last two generations who have never not known a digital life and have had to navigate issues such as cyberbullying, managing their identity online and mental health issues associated with internet use. This course is suitable for anyone who has pondered the effect the internet is having on us, good or bad? In particular those interested in the psychological impact leading a digital life has on young people.

How this course benefits students

This course will relate to students who want to gain knowledge of the effect the internet and social media is having on users both good and bad. This course will also focus on students who are interested in understanding the psychological impact that the internet has on people.

Why this course is important

In today’s world, we are seeing an increase in internet and social media usage which influences people both positive and negative. This course will further assist students in learning practices and procedures as well as state and federal laws and regulations needed to provide proper care to clients from all populations that have been influenced by internet and social media.

In this course, students will be focusing on Luke 12:15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

In Cyberpsychology, students will learn the importance to spread witness to people who need guidance, rehabilitation and support to diverse populations via the internet and social through God’s word.

Throughout the Bible we are told to not put our energy and desire into material possessions. We are also told to spread the word of Jesus as well as love our neighbors. Within our own communities, people are putting material possessions first allowing them to overtake their heart and therefore creating evil around them. Through this course, future counselors will learn to communicate and address the needs of those affected by the internet and social media.

In this course, students will learn how mental illness is influenced by the internet and social media and how this affects people from diverse populations

Practically minded

This course will emphasis the importance of ministry to those client’s in need of counseling by using knowledge gained from the course to assess and deliver resources to those in need by means of the Bible for knowledge in ministry.

Experientially transformed

Through the use of case studies and research, students will become prepared to practice within the scope of their field to treat clients who have been influenced by negative aspects of the internet and social media.
