CHP3230EN - Church Planting in Hindu Cultures

Course description

This course will explore the biblical principles, methods, and strategies of church planting in the specific context of Hindu people groups. More than one billion Hindus in the world today present a unique challenge to Christian missions; therefore, specific emphasis will be given to the concepts of conversion, baptism, ecclesiology, and contextualization of the gospel to help plant churches in the Hindu context.

How this course benefits students

This course is intended to be an introduction to the concept of gospel’s interaction with a culture and its missiological implications. The gospel is always shared and accepted within a particular cultural context. This course will deal with the context of over one billion Hindu people living around the world and most of them in India. Most Hindus have not accepted the gospel in the past several centuries and their response to the gospel is a huge missiological challenge. Therefore, students must learn the basic biblical and theological principles along with the unique methods, strategies, of making the gospel intelligent to Hindu people groups to lead them to Christ and to plant vibrant churches among them

Why this course is important

Hinduism is one of the oldest world religions with a significant following in India and many other parts of the world. In fact, more than a religion, it is a way of life or a culture that has not yet responded to Christ much. There are over a billion Hindus living mostly in India and around the world. The context of colonialism in India, specific Hindu cultural traditions, the lack of a concept of religious conversion, and the unique caste system has not led to many Hindus accepting Christ in the past centuries. It is also a failure of proper contextualization on the church’s part. Therefore, this course will help students learn the concepts of biblical contextualization for effective sharing of the gospel among Hindus and plant culturally relevant churches among them either in India or elsewhere.
