This course describes treatment effectiveness of social work practice in addictions and recovery. Those who take this course will examine substance abuse treatment goals and the differences between abstinence and harm reduction approaches, between inpatient and outpatient treatment, and between substance abuse and dependence. Students will understand the role of religion and spirituality in substance abuse and recovery and the challenges associated with substance abuse treatment. This course will also provide practical information for those seeking to help someone with a substance abuse problem.
Substance abuse is a problem for people of all cultures and of all walks of life. Approximately 27 million people worldwide are dependent on drugs. Students will become more prepared to serve people with addiction or in recovery wherever they may be. A social worker in any context can and will likely encounter a client with an addiction and should understand the basics of treatment and, if necessary, the basics of referral.
With the humility and compassion of Jesus at the center of your approach to addictions and recovery, you will have a unique program. People suffering from addictions can, at times, face impatience, anger, and hostility from those charged to treat them. Christians must emphasize compassion, understanding, and a spiritual approach to healing. Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to take steps to reach out to someone living with addiction issues.
