Course description

Students will analyze the effectiveness of nonprofit fundraising through campaigns, planned giving, and major gifts. Students will create a development plan to attract donors for a fictional nonprofit organization.

How this course benefits students

Students will learn how to ethically solicit funds for a nonprofit organization and how to operate in the most financially efficient way so that solicited funds will be applied to the mission of the organization. Students will also learn the standards identified by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability

Why this course is important

Government programs that aid those in need are often unwieldly and financially inefficient. Non-governmental organizations are vital in meet the needs of the poor and needy in communities. To provide assistance to the most people, nonprofit organizations rely on contributions from individuals and companies to have the funds they need. It is critical that nonprofit organizations engage in fundraising efforts to satisfy their mission.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

Christian practices include helping the poor and unfortunate. Christian organizations should operate efficiently and maximize those assets that are available for the organization’s purpose. Christ calls us to be good stewards of what we are given. Soliciting funds for an organization requires that one operate ethically.

Missionally driven

All Christians must be on mission to be the feet of Jesus in contributing their time and assets to organizations that meet the needs of their communities. Nonprofit organizations are critical in carrying out God’s purposes and God’s people are frequently solicited to donate money and time to many organizations. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States, with the possibility of as many as 10 million nonprofit organizations operating globally.

Contextually informed

This course will provide students with an understanding of how nonprofit organizations differ from traditional corporate practices and how they are treated differently under the law.

Nonprofit organizations address the needs of many cultures, both in the United States and abroad. Being sensitive to the needs of people of all cultures aids organizations to be the most effective.

Practically minded

This course will provide students with practical knowledge of how to be good stewards of an organization’s financial assets, but also to fulfill the mission of the nonprofit organization.

Experientially transformed

This course will provide students with the knowledge to engage in successful fundraising strategies In the graduate version of this course, students will create a development plan they could use to successfully operate a nonprofit organization.
