MWS6100EN - Jazz Composition

Course description

This a more practical approach to jazz composition and arranging techniques which includes orchestration for big bands, melody writing, transposition, and complex chord progressions.

How this course benefits students

Students will gain comprehensive knowledge that allows them to identify and write different elements of the music fundamentals. Students will be able to both create original, and analyze diatonic root position writing such as harmonic progressions or voice leadings. Each student will develop proficiency that enables them to compose and perform an original song for a big band.

Why this course is important

This is a graduate course that challenges each student’s creativity with the syntax of musical structure and allows them to interpret music with both the ear and the eye. This course focuses on preparing students to be competitive as a diverse jazz composer.
