Course description

Tuberculosis is one of the most common communicable disease worldwide affecting about 2 billion population. This course will describe determinants, prevention, control strategies, and burden of tuberculosis globally. The course will also explore both active and latent TB infection and the implications of both type of infections.

How this course benefits students

As global missional leaders, tuberculosis may be one of the most common infectious disease that would be encountered. Student need to understand risk and protective factors for the disease in order to protect themselves and also help prevent spread of disease in their communities.

Why this course is important

The desire of God for us is to live in good health. Therefore, global missional leaders should help others around them know the desire of God for their lives by preventing the spread of disease. In addition, the prevalence of TB is increasing worldwide especially because of the increase in HIV disease. As missional leaders minister to people all over the world spiritually, they should also minister to their physical body.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

Global missional leaders need to utilize their knowledge of TB to help prevent the spread of disease. Health care workers in the mission field should combine their knowledge with faith in God that He can heal all diseases. Students should be able to identify symptoms of TB, prevent spread of disease on the mission field and provide spiritual assistance as needed.

Missionally driven

Students will be encouraged to give health seminar on to their community about TB, while focusing on symptom, risk factors, treatment, complications and burden of disease. In addition, their health education will also focus on prevention strategies and TB testing.

Contextually informed

The course will also emphasize God's desire for us to be in good health and it is our responsibility to use the Knowledge of disease given to us to protect ourselves and the community we served,

Interculturally focused

Tuberculosis affects almost one third of the world and cuts across all continents and culture. However, prevalence of disease is higher in developing countries and countries with high rates of HIV. The course will explore the intercultural aspect of disease on how the disease is spread especially in community where there is overcrowding and high rates of communal living.

Practically minded

Students will leave the course with an understanding of causes of TB, concepts of prevention and spread, the health care burden of the disease, and key challenges to prevention of TB especially in resource poor countries.

Experientially transformed

Students will be encouraged to identify risk factors of disease in their community and discuss how to combat the spread by writing a "Basic facts" paper on TB.
