HLT5610EN - Issues & Values in Healthcare Ethics Committees

Course description

Students will discuss, analyze, and formulate phosophical and ethical positions related to clinical heathcare cases, improving their value clarification and analytical skills.

How this course benefits students

Advanced students need to be able to articulate and discern the ethical principles inherent in cases where ethical dilemmas confound patients, family members, and the healthcare staff. They also will learn the principles of fostering dialogue which encourages mutual respect and group decision making. A missional approach involves immersion into the issues and compleixities of healthcare ethics and the means to make decisions in this context.

Why this course is important

Ethics in healthcare is a “hot topic.” The pillars of ethics and ethical theories flow largely out of religious thought and tradition.

How this course relates to missional core values

Biblically based

Biblical faith is intended to interact with real-life complex issues. This principle is evident in the course in that core values are defined, and then through a process of reasoning, careful application is made. This is a type of aiding those who mourn.

Missionally driven

If healthcare workers desire to live out their missional calling in the healthcare field, they will desire to guide and shape their colleagues and institutions to act more ethically.

Contextually informed

The healthcare field is a unique ministry context, and a course on healthcare ethics would help caregivers apply broader biblical principles to specific healthcare issues.

Interculturally focused

A large part of healthcare ethics tends to the issues of culture and equity. Healthcare values can change among differing cultures. Ethics takes this into account.

Practically minded

Students will work through practical examples of determining the right thing to do in real life dilemmas.

Experientially transformed

A large part of healthcare ethics tends to the issues of culture and equity. Healthcare values can change among differing cultures. Ethics takes this into account.
