Course description

A comprehensive study of the musical influences that has contributed to the eclectic style of American music. This course will investigate and analyze the most influential music that has contributed to the American music culture. Particular attention will be given to religious music from the American Colonies to the 21st century.

How this course benefits students

Students will be able to identify the stylistic markers, historical context, social significance and cultural impact that this musical influence had on the American culture. Students will develop an argument to suggest what musical influence in the American culture had the greatest influence on the church. Evaluate specific elements that distinguish this style over the other influences.

Why this course is important

This is a graduate course that challenges the student to determine the most influential music of the American cultures. While this course will survey several music influences, the primary purpose is to identify the music in the American Culture that had the greatest influence in the church.
